Wednesday, November 12th Kick-Off Reception hosted by: Malikha Mallette, on-air personality at Power 105.1 FM. The event was sponsored by Banco Popular, New York Women In Film & Television and Greater New York Chamber of Commerce.
Thursday, November 13th, featured the Red Carpet special screening of “I’m Through with White Girls.” Directed by Jennifer Sap and written by Courtney Lilly (Arrested Development, Everybody Hates Chris, My Boys) is a quirky romantic comedy that addresses race, class, and cultural identity. The event was held at the Magic Johnson Theater, Harlem, New York.
Friday, November 14th, premiered the festival’s first International Day which featured the World Premiere of “Deeper than Sex.” A Nigerian movie that deals with one of the health related issue that plagues Africa today. The film was produced by Patience Ozokwo (Mama G). A keynote panel of some of the prominent Nollywood stars and producers led the audience into a special question and answer segment. The event was held at the United Nations.
On Saturday, November 15, 2008, the African American Women In Cinema (AAWIC) in
partnership with Save Africa Concerts Foundation (SACAID) hosted their Closing Awards Ceremony in honor of their 11th Annual International Film Festival that featured four days of events including a Red Carpet Movie Screening, Celebrity Workshop, and International Day at the United Nations. The Closing Awards Ceremony featured a fashion show and was held at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, 515 Malcolm X Boulevard, Harlem, NYC.
Pioneer Award Recipients: Tamara Tunie, Actress (Devil’s Advocate/ Law & Order: SVU) Phyllis Yvonne Stickney, Actress (Die Hard: With a Vengeance, What’s Love Got To Do With It) Patience Ozokwo (Mama G), Actress (Nollywood—Superstar Actress) Ini Edo, Actress (Nollywood—Superstar Actress)
Legacy Award Recipient: The late Josephine Baker (The first African American female to star in a major motion picture and to become a world-famous entertainer. She is also respected for her contributions to the US Civil Rights Movement.) Josephine Bakers son Jean Claude proudly accepted the award in his late mother’s honor.
