NIGERIA INDEPENDENCE DAY PARADE, OCTOBER 2, 2004.
Save Africa Concerts in partnership with Community Health Network, and WBLS Radio participated in the Nigerian Day Parade. More than Twenty members of SAC including volunteers, participated in this event, that had in it’s attendance over four thousand [4,000] people.
SAC’S AIM FOR THE EVENT.
SAC aimed at disseminating information on the Prevention, Stigma Eradication, Care and Support of People living with HIV/AIDS. The organization also planned to help as many as possible, know their HIV status.
ACHIEVED RESULT.
SAC was able to distribute a lot of informative literatures, and condoms to the general public. In partnership with Community Health Network and trained SAC counselors [including those living with HIV/AIDS], many people were counseled and tested. More than Thirty people were counseled, but twenty two got tested for HIV and five people were positive. They were then referred to the appropriate places for more information and help on how to deal with their HIV positive status.
DEDUCTIONS
We deduced that people are receptive to knowing their status if adequate counsel is given. We also noticed that in an atmosphere of camaraderie, people are less afraid and are more willing to know their status. SAC was thus encouraged to continue it’s good work of attending more rallies, and carry out more concerts to be able to avail a lot of people the opportunity to know their status.
